Your Deutschlandticket covers you — but not your bike. Bicycle transport is not included in the subscription, and the rules vary considerably depending on which region you're in.
Here's what you need to know before you head to the platform:
- Costs: You'll typically need an additional ticket for your bicycle. Pricing differs by region — for example, €7 for a nationwide daily bicycle ticket or €42.50 per month in NRW.
- Free transport: Some states make an exception. In Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, bringing a bicycle along costs nothing. In Rhineland-Palatinate, bicycles travel free on weekdays from 9 AM.
- Capacity restrictions: Space for bikes on trains and trams is limited. Strollers, wheelchairs, and standing passengers take priority over bicycles.
- Permitted bicycle types: Standard bikes, e-bikes (up to 25 km/h), folding bikes, and children's bikes are accepted. Tandems and cargo bikes may only be brought on board when there's sufficient space.
Planning tip: Travel outside of peak hours — before 7 AM or after 6:30 PM — to improve your chances of finding space. Always check the specific rules for your route with the local transport association before travelling.
