What is the Deutschlandticket?

The Deutschlandticket (also known as the D-Ticket or 49-Euro-Ticket) was introduced in May 2023 by the German government as a nationwide flat-rate travel pass. For a fixed monthly price, it gives unlimited travel on all local public transport in Germany.

What it covers

  • All regional trains (RE, RB, IRE) across Germany
  • All S-Bahn networks (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, etc.)
  • All U-Bahn / subway systems
  • All trams and city buses
  • All rural and intercity buses (not operated by Fernbus/FlixBus)
  • Valid in all 16 German federal states
  • Also valid at some cross-border stations (e.g. Basel SBB, Kufstein, Salzburg Hbf)

What it does NOT cover

  • High-speed ICE, IC, EC trains (long-distance / Fernverkehr)
  • FlixBus, BlaBlaCar or other private long-distance coaches
  • Night trains (Nightjet, etc.)
  • Seat reservations (must be booked separately even on regional trains)
  • Bikes during peak hours on some networks (separate bike ticket may be needed)
Tip: For intercity travel, combine the Deutschlandticket (local transport) with a separate ICE/IC ticket in the DB Navigator app. This is often cheaper than buying a full Fernverkehr ticket.

The Subscription Rule – What Tourists Must Know

By law, the Deutschlandticket is only available as a monthly subscription (Monatsabonnement). It is not possible to buy it for a single day, a weekend, or just one week. The minimum purchase is always one full calendar month.

This is regulated by the German states' joint agreement (Ländervereinbarung) and the national Deutschlandticket framework. All providers – DB Navigator, BVG, HVV, and TicketPlus+ – must offer it as a subscription under these rules.

Monthly subscription only

You subscribe for at least one month (€63). There is no day ticket, week ticket, or short-term option.

Auto-renews monthly

The subscription automatically continues each month unless you cancel in time. Set a reminder before month-end.

Pause feature (TicketPlus+ only)

TicketPlus+ is the only major provider offering a pause feature. You can pause your subscription for months you won't be in Germany.

Cancel up to 24h before month-end

At TicketPlus+, you can cancel as late as 24 hours before the end of the month – far more flexible than other providers who require notice by the 10th of the previous month.

Important: The Deutschlandticket can be purchased at any time for the current month and is issued within 30 seconds. However, you always pay the full €63 – even if you buy on the 26th of the month.

Frequently Asked Questions for Tourists

Can I use the Deutschlandticket immediately after buying?+
Yes – you can buy the Deutschlandticket for the current month at any time. It is issued within 30 seconds and valid immediately. However, you always pay the full €63 for the entire month – even if you buy on the 26th. There is no pro-rated pricing.
Do I need a German address to buy?+
No. TicketPlus+ does not require a German address or bank account. You only need an email address and an international payment method (Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Mastercard or VISA).
Can I use the Deutschlandticket to get from the airport to the city?+
Usually yes – most German airports are connected by S-Bahn or regional trains that accept the Deutschlandticket. Notable exceptions include Munich Airport (only S-Bahn S1/S8, not the Lufthansa Express Bus) and Frankfurt Airport (S-Bahn but NOT the AIRail/ICE).
Is the Deutschlandticket valid on intercity/ICE trains?+
No. The Deutschlandticket is only valid on local and regional transport (buses, trams, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, RE/RB trains). For ICE, IC or EC trains, you need a separate long-distance ticket.
What happens if I forget to cancel?+
If you don't cancel in time, the subscription renews for another month. At TicketPlus+, you can cancel up to 24 hours before the end of the month – much more flexible than other providers who require cancellation by the 10th of the previous month.
Can I use the Deutschlandticket in Austria or Switzerland?+
The Deutschlandticket is only valid within Germany. However, it is valid at some cross-border stations including Basel SBB (Switzerland), Salzburg Hbf (Austria), and Kufstein (Austria) – but only on trains running on the German side.
Is there a tourist day ticket alternative?+
Yes. If you only visit Germany for a few days, daily tickets from local operators (BVG Berlin, MVV Munich, HVV Hamburg) may be better value. The Deutschlandticket makes sense if you're staying for 5+ days in a month across multiple cities.
